CreativeU

UX/ UI Case Study

CreativeU is a social platform for professionals in the creative industry

Project Overview

The Product:

Creative U is an online social platform for students and professionals in the creative field that provides an online platform where users can upload and share their work, gain inspiration and feedback, and share their knowledge with other users.

Project duration:

1 month

The Problem:

Platforms such as Skillshare and LinkedIn provide extended learning opportunities through their portals; however, they are subject to a subscription fee, thereby restricting access for individuals who may not have the financial means to benefit from these services.

The Goal:

To design a social platform for young professionals to network and connect with like-minded people within their creative industry that doesn’t require a paid subscription.

My Role:

Lead UX Designer for mobile and responsive designs

Responsibilities:

User Research
Wireframing

Understanding the user

User research: summary

Based on my preliminary assumptions regarding social platforms, I formulated a set of questions intended for use in conducting interviews as part of my user research. Through these inquiries, it became evident that prospective participants expressed a distinct desire for a platform that facilitates connections with other users operating within the same creative industry as themselves.

Persona: Emily

Problem statement:

Emily is a busy college student who needs guidance and resources because she struggles to find inspiration for her creative endeavors.

Persona: Alex

Problem statement:

Alex us a busy junior copywriter who needs a supportive community that can provide inspiration and feedback because he struggles to grow as a writer.

Competitive Analysis

A comprehensive competitive analysis of several competitors has furnished valuable insights into the specific opportunities that warrant attention and resolution within the creative platform.

Ideation

I conducted a rapid ideation exercise to generate a range of concepts aimed at effectively addressing the opportunities highlighted in the competitive analysis. These concepts were strategically concentrated on enhancing user experiences in terms of inspiration, feedback, and knowledge sharing within the platform.

Starting the design

Digital wireframes

Following the development of preliminary paper wireframes, I proceeded to craft initial design iterations for the CreativeU mobile application. These designs were centered to facilitate the seamless selection of classes by users.

Low-fidelity prototype

I proceeded to craft initial design prototypes with a specific emphasis on streamlining the user experience by designing an intuitive user flow. This flow was tailored to enable users to seamlessly navigate and select a class of their choice within the application.

Usability study: parameters

Study type:

Unmoderated usability study

Location:

United States, remote

Participants

5 Participants

Length:

5-10 minutes

Usability study: findings

These were the main findings discovered in the study:

Finding 1

User want more control on what displays on their feed.

Finding 2

Users had trouble identifying the icons purpose.

Finding 3

Users had trouble returning to the home screen.

Refining the design

Mockups

Bases on the insights obtained from the usability study, I introduced a filtering feature that empowers users to exercise control over the content displayed within their feeds.

Further design enhancements encompassed the incorporation of descriptive labels alongside icons, thereby facilitating swift user identification and seamless navigation within the application.

High-fidelity prototype

The high-fidelity prototype maintains an identical user flow as the low-fidelity counterpart, with design modifications that were introduced after the usability study.

Accessibility considerations

Consistent UI components that help users identify components on different pages with desired functionality.

The use of descriptive and informative headings and labels so the user will know the purpose of each section.

Responsive Design

I employed the same sitemap utilized for the mobile application to guide the design of the responsive website, ensuring a consistent structure across various devices.

Responsive design

The design variations include screen sizes for mobile, tablet, and desktop devices.

Takeaways

Impact:

Impact: Users shared that the platform would be ideal for helping them gain inspiration and knowledge within the creative industry. One quote from a peer,” I think this platform would be highly useful to connect and learn with other professions in my industry.”

What I learned:

What I learned: I learned that with extensive user research, navigating the comprehensive design process, and ensuring a strong alignment with the identified user needs, I was able to successfully generate a series of viable solutions that possess the potential to greatly benefit the users.

Next steps

Introduce a resume feature so users can use it as an online portfolio.

Uncovered methods to generate revenue for the social platform, so access will remain free for all its users.

Conduct research to identify additional user pain points within the platform.
